The World Wide Web (WWW) is celebrating 30 years on air. Google Doodle greeted it with style, dedicating a logo wherein animated globe is revolving on an offbeat computer system. Its glimpse revives the time when the internet was coming out of its cocoon. The revolution was at the nascent stage, when internet marketing has been just a dream.
Let’s rewind the memory when it was in the pipeline. Sir Time Berners-Lee was the brain behind this ultra-revolutionary invention. On March 12, 1989, this 33 years old computer information technology expert came with a proposal at Europe’s CERN lab. The final draft of his mastermind proposal viz. ‘Information Management: A Proposal’ was tabled before his boss.
The first reaction of the boss was “vague, but exciting”. Initially, Berners-Lee conceived a superb concept of hyperlinking the database with typed links namely “Mesh”. It was an innovative concept of sharing information among multiple computers.
The boss boosted his effort and gave him support to develop a flow chart into an active model. It was the time when he employed HTML language- the HTTP application. The world got its first web browser and page editor in the form of worldwideweb.app. It was the step to climb up the digital marketing through the pool of informative content. The year 1991 became historic when the external web servers were aired.
The world was eagerly waiting for it. The wait was over in April 1993 when the web was up. The refining was still going on the backstage. The breakthrough was discovered when the first search engine, which was capable of accepting images, emerged in November. It was Mosaic that proved a turning point in terms of gaining popularity. Users started falling for it, as they found it friendly.
Gradually, innovation came with refined browsers. Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer emerged its descendent.
Now, the globe has the internet where millions of users come every second to explore more and more. Since the year 2000, they are diving into the endless ocean of data through the wireless internet. It’s the net that gave rise to netizens.
On its 30th anniversary, the father of WWW Tim-Berner has an appeal for the users. He urged for a complete control of your data. He warned about the commodification of personal information. This practice is boosting up by leaps and bounds.
As a piece of wise advice, he stated that he is trying hard to prevent his invention from dominating online threats. These threats include misinformation and inadequate data protection practices. What he said reflected that the data is not oil; it’s not a commodity.
He was mesmerized on claiming that his invention is a conduit for marginalized groups to amplify their presence and make their life easier. At the same time, he raised concerns by saying that it is an open gate for scammers to inflict people, spread hatred and make internet the field of cybercrimes.
He said, “If we give up on building a better web now, then the web will not have failed us. We will have failed the web.”
